What are ants?

Ants come in a variety of shapes and sizes, display different behaviors, live in a multitude of environments, and consume many different kinds of food. They are social creatures that live and work together in large colonies. Ants can be easily identified by their three distinct body regions - head, thorax, and abdomen. The reproductive members are winged. These insects are common household invaders.

Some of the common species of ants that are found around Charlotte, North Carolina are pharaoh, Argentine, pavement, and fire ants.

  • Pharaoh ants have pale yellow to light brown colored bodies, and their abdomen are almost black in color. These ants live in large colonies and are difficult to control due to their ability to "bud" and establish new colonies.

  • Argentine ants live together in massive colonies. These small ants are shiny and are dark brown to black in color. They can also be identified by the musty odor they give off when crushed.

  • Pavement ants are most often found nesting in the cracks of pavement or cement. Adults are brown to black in color and their head and thorax are covered in grooved, parallel lines. These ants are particularly problematic inside homes that have stone foundations or dirt basements.

  • Fire ants are reddish-brown in color. They are highly aggressive and are known to attack any potential threat in large numbers. They deliver painful bites and stings.

Are ants dangerous?

Ants do have the potential to be dangerous. Many species, like the Argentine ant and pavement ant, are considered nuisance pests and do not pose any significant danger to people or property. But, other species of ants like the fire ant and pharaoh ant do pose significant threats to people. Pharaoh ants spread diseases, including salmonella and Streptococcus. Inside hospitals, they are known for invading patient wounds and intravenous lines. The fire ant’s painful stings inject venom that is strong enough to trigger serious allergic reactions, which may require medical attention.

Why do I have an ant problem?

You have ants on your property because it is offering them food, water, and shelter. Ants live on properties and inside homes that provide them with easy access to the things they need to survive. Ants are initially attracted to properties with things like open containers of trash, outdoor eating areas, gardens, pet food, and compost piles. Ants regularly invade homes while foraging for new food sources. Some species of ants, such as Argentine ants, are attracted to moist or decaying wood located in your home.

Where will I find ants?

Ants are normally found nesting outside underneath soil and mulch, in piles of wood, in cracks in pavement and sidewalks, along fence lines, in gardens, under fallen trees, under landscaping ties, or inside tree stumps. Ants that have found their way inside looking for food or to escape severe weather conditions often decide to create indoor satellite nests. Common indoor nesting spots include under floors, inside insulation, in crawlspaces, in wall voids, behind appliances, near heating systems, and sometimes inside structural wood.
