Occasional Invaders

What are occasional invaders?

As their name suggests, occasional invaders are a species of insect that occasionally enter homes and other structures throughout the year. They usually enter homes in large groups when the weather outside becomes unsuitable for them to live successfully. In and around Charlotte, North Carolina the most common species of occasional invading pests are centipedes, earwigs, and silverfish.an earwig crawling on wood in north carolina

  • Centipedes have long, flattened, segmented, worm-like bodies that are yellow to dark brown in color. Each of their body segments has its own pair of legs. The first pair of legs end in sharp claws that contain venom, which they use to capture and paralyze their prey.

  • Earwigs have long smooth bodies that are dark brown or reddish brown in color. Their most unique feature is a pair of pincer-like appendages (cerci) that extend off their abdomens.

  • Silverfish have elongated, teardrop-shaped bodies that are covered in bluish-brown scales. They have long antennae and three, long, bristle-like appendages that extend off their back end. Silverfish can also be identified by the wriggling, fish-like manner in which they move.

Are occasional invaders dangerous?

Occasional invaders are not usually considered a significant danger to people or property. While many people find earwigs and silverfish intimidating to look at, they pose no health risks to people and are considered nuisance pests. Centipedes, on the other hand, have the potential to pose a bit more of a risk to people. While rare, they do have the ability to deliver a painful bite if they are being directly handled. However, the good news is that their venom is not strong enough to cause serious health issues in people.

Why do I have an occasional invader problem?

Occasional invaders will move into homes for a variety of reasons. Centipedes, earwigs, and silverfish typically move inside homes when the weather outside becomes too hot and dry for them to live comfortably. All require a moist environment to live. Occasional invaders are also known for moving inside homes and other buildings in the late fall or winter months when the weather outside becomes too cold. Earwigs, centipedes, and silverfish most often make their way inside through cracks and crevices in the exterior walls of a home's foundation and through gaps around windows and doors.

Where will I find occasional invaders?

When living outside, occasional invaders mostly like to live in dark, damp places like under mulch, soil, landscaping ties, and rocks. When they move inside, they take up residence in places that mimic their outdoor homes. Once inside, they move into humid, dark, hard-to-reach areas of a home like attics, wall voids, crawlspaces, basements, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.
