Pantry Pests

What are pantry pests?

Pantry pests consist of beetles, moths, and weevils. Pantry pests breed and feed inside stored products and dry goods. These pests are most problematic wherever food is being stored or prepared. Two common species of pantry pests in and around Charlotte, North Carolina are the Indian meal moth and the granary weevil.

  • Indian meal moths. Adult Indian meal moths grow to about 5/8th of an inch from wing tip to wing tip. Their wings have a dark band that separates the front wing from the back wing. The front portion of the wing is yellowish-gray in color, while the back half of the wing is bronze, copper, or dark gray. Their worm-like larvae grow to be about 1/2 of an inch in length. Their bodies can be off-white, brown, greenish, or pinkish in color. Their head and thorax is a yellowish-brown color.

  • Granary weevils are a type of stored product pest and they are usually brown to reddish-brown in color. Adults grow to about 1/8th of an inch in length. They have hard-shelled bodies and noticeable pitted patterns on their heads. Granary weevils have wings, but they are non-functional. Their larvae are wrinkly, grub-like, and whitish in color.

Are pantry pests dangerous?

Pantry pests are not dangerous pests, and they do not pose any significant health risks to people. Nevertheless, they do contaminate food sources and therefore, should be eliminated from your home as soon as their presence is noticed. Pantry pests have four stages of development - egg, larva, pupa, and adult. In most cases, the larval stage is usually the stage of development that is most destructive. The female lays her eggs on a stored food product, and when the larvae hatch they feed on and contaminate the food with their saliva and excrement.

Why do I have a pantry pest problem?

Adult Indian meal moths are attracted to outdoor lighting and have the potential to find their way into a home or other building on their own. They get inside through spaces around windows and doors, open screens, and other small openings they discover. Both Indian meal moths and granary weevils most often find their way into homes through stored products purchased from a store, that is already infested with their eggs or larvae. Indian meal moth larvae feed on and infest a variety of dry goods, including dried fruits, grains, seeds, nuts, chocolate, candies, bird seed, dry pet food, and spices. Granary weevils infest whole grains and seeds.
